On the Beaten Path

Summer time is just around the corner here in the Philippines and it's that time of the year again for travel, discoveries and new adventures.

Back in December, my wife and our 3 year old boy Elias went on a roadtrip up north. We logged in 1200kms (roundtrip) and was glad our little car held up! I just want to share my favorite pictures from this trip.

a tourist walk past in front of my camera in Calle Crisologo at dusk. The most famous time to visit this historical area of Vigan. But as early as 5am, it was already packed with tourists.

We planned to go to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte straight from Manila and to stay there for a couple of days, then stop to Laoag, Vigan and other places on the way back to Manila. That plan had to go out the window because the traffic was really so bad at the expressway exits and in Santo Tomas in La Union. Sitting there in traffic looks like a scene from a major apocalypse movie where everyone is leaving town.

A worker at a Vigan pottery tranports a jar to another area of the factory. These handmade jars are made from clays found in the western banks of Vigan. Before shaping, the clay is kneaded to a fine consistency and workers had to manually pick out small debris and other bits before putting it on a wheel for molding. After molding, they dry the jars before firing it up in a kiln.

Since we were not following an itinerary, we'd stop on the side of the road every time we see something picturesque. I'd take pictures and sometimes, we'll just stop to soak in the view.

I was really overwhelmed by the windmills! They looked like giant robots coming at you. This is my most favorite picture from this trip. Photographed from Pagudpud beach.

On our way back to Vigan–we planned to stay there again for a night before going back to Manila– we stopped again in the sand dunes to spend more time on it. Fantastic view!

I hope you enjoyed the photographs as much as I did in making them. But more than the photographs, I enjoyed this special trip with my little family more. Now go out and travel. Enjoy the ride and take pictures from time to time.

Take care!
